Vietnam airport transfer: from arrivals to your hotel, airport by airport

Landing after a long flight, unsure how to reach your hotel? Your Vietnam airport transfer can be a metered taxi, a ride-hailing app, a hotel shuttle or a private car booked before you fly. This guide compares the options, gives approximate distances and drive times for five airports, and lists what to send for a smooth pickup.

Landing tired or late in Vietnam: how do you get from the airport to your hotel?

The first hour after landing is often the hardest part of a trip. After many hours of travel, with no mobile data, in the dark and still hunting for the exit with your luggage, it is easy to agree to arrangements you would not choose on a normal day.

The simple fix is to decide how you will leave the airport before you board: know roughly how far your hotel is, how long the drive takes, and what a clear arrangement covers (vehicle, meeting point, price).

  • Save your hotel’s full address and a map pin offline, so any driver can see where you are going.
  • Count your large suitcases and note anything bulky, such as a stroller or a golf bag.

Taxi, ride-hailing app, hotel shuttle or private transfer: which suits your arrival?

  • Metered taxi. Suits you if you travel light and land in daylight. Ask airport staff or follow the airport’s taxi signs, check the meter is switched on and note the car number.
  • Ride-hailing app (such as Grab). Suits you if your phone has working mobile data. Follow the app’s pickup instructions and match the plate number before you get in.
  • Hotel shuttle or hotel car. Worth checking if your hotel offers one. Ask whether it is included or charged, where to meet, and what happens if your flight is late.
  • Public bus, where available. Works if you travel light and are not in a hurry. Ask airport staff or your hotel which routes run to your area and when the last one leaves.
  • Pre-booked private transfer. Suits late arrivals, families, groups, lots of luggage and longer drives. Get the vehicle, meeting point, waiting allowance and inclusions in writing; ask about child seats if you need one.

Is a pre-booked transfer really worth it?

Not always. If you land in daylight with a backpack, have data on your phone and your hotel is close, a metered taxi or an app is often all you need.

Consider booking ahead when a mistake would be costly: a midnight landing with children, several large suitcases, a 30–35 km drive into Hanoi or Nha Trang, no mobile data, or a group needing one vehicle. It gives you clarity: an agreed meeting point, a vehicle matched to your luggage, and terms in writing before you fly. If that sounds like your arrival, get a private transfer estimate. For a driver beyond the airport run, see our guide to a private car with driver in Vietnam.

How far is your hotel from the airport, and how long does the drive take?

All figures are approximate and vary with traffic, time of day, weather and your exact address.

Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1 (Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon, SGN)

District 1 is about 6–8 km away, but the drive varies a lot: about 20–50 minutes, longer at rush hour. For a Ho Chi Minh City airport transfer or pickup (SGN), send your flight number and terminal so the meeting point is agreed before you land.

Noi Bai airport to Hanoi Old Quarter (HAN)

Noi Bai is about 30–35 km from the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, usually about 40–70 minutes. Ask where the car will stop if your street is too narrow for it. Noi Bai is also the usual gateway for Ha Long Bay and Sapa; if you are heading straight on to either, allow a buffer in case your flight is late.

Da Nang airport to Hoi An transfer, plus My Khe beach (DAD)

Da Nang’s center and My Khe beach are about 3–6 km away, roughly 10–25 minutes. Hoi An Ancient Town is about 28–30 km, about 40–60 minutes; if your hotel is inside it, ask where the car will stop.

Cam Ranh airport to Nha Trang transfer (CXR)

Cam Ranh International is not in Nha Trang itself: the center is about 30–35 km away, roughly 35–55 minutes. That is why a pre-arranged transfer matters here.

Phu Quoc airport transfer (PQC)

Phu Quoc International is about 10 km from Duong Dong town, about 15–25 minutes. Other resort areas take roughly 15–50 minutes, depending on the side of the island. Send the resort name and address exactly as on your booking.

Sao Beach (Bai Sao), Phu Quoc: white sand, clear shallow turquoise water and a forested headland under a blue sky with clouds

What to send for a smooth airport pickup

Copy this list, fill it in and send it to OT Travel on WhatsApp when you book:

  • Name of the lead traveler (ask how the driver will recognize you at the meeting point)
  • Flight number and date
  • Arrival airport and terminal
  • Hotel name, full address and map pin
  • Passengers: number of adults, and children with their ages
  • Child seat needed: yes or no
  • Luggage: number of large suitcases and cabin bags, plus anything bulky
  • A phone number that works on WhatsApp after you land

What to ask before you confirm

  1. Where exactly will the driver meet me?
  2. How long is the waiting allowance after landing, and what happens after that?
  3. What does the quote cover: vehicle, driver and scheduled time?
  4. Are tolls, parking and airport fees included?
  5. Is a child seat available for my child’s age?
  6. If my flight changes, how should I send the new details?

Keep the answers in writing (a chat message is fine) and save a screenshot.

Which car do you need? Seats versus luggage

Seat count is only half the question: a “7-seat” car does not mean seven travelers plus seven large suitcases will fit. OT Travel checks seating and luggage together before confirming.

Heading on by intercity bus after you land?

Itineraries often continue by road, for example to Da Lat, Mui Ne, Sapa, Ha Long or Hue. Do not book a bus that leaves soon after your scheduled landing, and confirm the bus pickup point as an address and map pin in writing. It may not be at the airport. If not, a short private transfer can bridge the gap.

Our Vietnam sleeper bus booking guide and Vietnam bus travel tips give more advice on intercity buses.

Vietnam airport transfer FAQ

How do I get from Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1?

Take a metered taxi, use a ride-hailing app, ask your hotel about a car or book a private transfer. The drive of about 6–8 km takes about 20–50 minutes, longer at rush hour.

How long does it take from Noi Bai airport to Hanoi Old Quarter?

Allow about 40–70 minutes for the drive of roughly 30–35 km, depending on traffic and your exact address. Share the full address and a map pin so the driver knows where to stop.

Is it better to take a taxi or Grab from the airport in Vietnam?

Both can work. A metered taxi needs no app; a ride-hailing app needs mobile data and a clear pickup point. With a late arrival, children or lots of luggage, a pre-booked transfer with agreed terms can be simpler.

How much does a Vietnam airport transfer cost?

It depends on the route, the vehicle and what the quote includes, so this guide does not list fixed figures. The form on this page shows an estimate, and OT Travel confirms the price and inclusions before the trip.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Send the updated arrival time as soon as you know, plus the new flight number if it has changed. Ask how long the waiting allowance is and what happens beyond it.

How far is Da Nang airport from Hoi An, and how long is the drive?

Hoi An Ancient Town is about 28–30 km from Da Nang airport, roughly 40–60 minutes by road, depending on traffic and your exact address. If your hotel is inside the Ancient Town, ask where the car will stop.

Is Cam Ranh airport in Nha Trang?

No. Cam Ranh International is not in Nha Trang itself: the center is about 30–35 km away, roughly 35–55 minutes. Agree the meeting point and send your hotel address and map pin before you land.

Should I tip my airport transfer driver in Vietnam?

Tipping is optional and up to you. If you are unsure, ask what the confirmed quote already covers, then decide whether to add a tip.
