VIETNAM TRANSPORT GUIDE
Vietnam bus travel tips: before you book and board
Prepare for bus travel in Vietnam by checking your service, boarding point and luggage arrangements. This guide covers intercity coaches and sleepers, followed by separate advice for local city buses. Confirm the details against your chosen operator’s current instructions.

Separate city buses from intercity coaches
City buses serve local routes and stops. Intercity coaches connect destinations, with tickets selected by departure, operator and seat or berth type. A local bus stop and an intercity terminal are not interchangeable.
Vietnam’s official tourism guide describes open-tour services with sleeping berths or reclining seats. The word “bus” alone therefore tells you little about the actual layout. See Vietnam Tourism’s transport overview.
- Check exact departure and destination addresses, including any connecting shuttle.
Book the journey, not just the lowest fare
Compare departure time, vehicle type, boarding point, drop-off and onward transport. A convenient arrival address can outweigh a small fare difference. Read change and cancellation conditions before paying.
FUTA’s official booking guide includes vehicle, seat and pickup/drop-off selection. After checkout, open the confirmation and check that the details match your plan. FUTA online booking guide.
- Check the calendar date carefully for departures after midnight.
- Save the ticket, payment confirmation and contact details offline.
Look beyond “VIP”, “limousine” or “sleeper”
Check whether your departure offers reclining seats, sleeping berths or cabins. Review the actual seat map and vehicle photos; a service label does not establish space or privacy.
For sleepers, confirm berth dimensions, upper or lower position and access. With children, agree ticket and berth arrangements instead of assuming sharing is allowed.
- Request confirmation of adjoining places when travelling together.
- Check toilets, charging and other important facilities for this departure.
Confirm the pickup point in writing
Save the full address, map pin and instructions. Check whether boarding is at a terminal counter, office or approved roadside pickup. Entering your hotel address in a form does not confirm hotel collection.
Confirm any shuttle’s meeting point and ready time. Follow the requested check-in time, keep your phone reachable and save the address in Vietnamese for directions.
- If you cannot locate the pickup, contact the operator before changing location.
Leave room between the bus and your next booking
Allow a buffer before flights, trains or timed activities. The published journey duration is planning information; also allow time to reach your next departure point from the bus drop-off.
Check the arrival date as well as the hour. After an early-morning arrival, arrange somewhere to wait or leave bags until your room is ready.
- Allow a generous gap for critical connections.
- Recheck departure messages before leaving for the pickup.
Agree luggage arrangements before payment
Send bag numbers and approximate sizes, especially for large suitcases, sports equipment or pushchairs. Confirm acceptance, extra charges and storage. Keep documents, money and essentials with you.
Booking rules are not identical across operators: exact seat allocation, shuttle coverage, boarding documents and bulky-luggage acceptance need checking for your ticket. Vexere’s passenger and booking FAQ.
- Label bags and keep any baggage receipt.
- Check your seat area and collect your own bags before leaving.
Make boarding and rest stops straightforward
Wait for the vehicle to stop before boarding or leaving it, keep passageways clear and follow the crew’s boarding instructions. VinBus’s published service standards require boarding and alighting at stops with the vehicle stationary. VinBus service standards.
At rest stops, ask how long you have and where to return. Keep essentials in a small bag to avoid opening your main suitcase.
- Note the vehicle and parking position before walking away.
- Use headphones and keep calls quiet in a shared cabin.
For city buses, check the route and payment steps
Verify the route number, direction and your alighting stop in the operator’s route information. VinBus provides stop and route-search guidance; use that information to plan the walk at both ends. VinBus route and passenger guidance.
Payment steps vary. Transerco’s June 2026 Hanoi guidance says cashless single-journey users must validate when boarding and alighting. Follow the instructions for your fare product and route, and check that your intended payment method is accepted. Hanoi electronic-ticket instructions.
- Have the destination name ready to show the crew.
- Keep your ticket or transaction record until the journey is complete.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to print an intercity bus ticket?
Check your operator’s instructions. Vexere notes that electronic confirmations are widely accepted but some operators require a paper ticket collected at their office or counter. Save your confirmation and bring the identification requested for your booking.
Can I choose an exact seat or sleeper berth?
Only if that departure supports it and the place is confirmed. Some bookings allow a ticket quantity without assigning an exact position, so ask before paying if a lower berth or adjacent seats are important.
Is hotel pickup included with every intercity ticket?
No. Ask whether your selected service includes a shuttle and whether your address is within its pickup area. Confirm the meeting point and ready time separately from the main coach departure.
